:help2:29 gallon tank. for diseased fish it says 1 pkt per 10 gallons of water for 5 days. How do I use it for cyanobacteria? (take nothing for granted in explaination) TIA

and then a water change? if so how much? do I put new carbon in? it said if it was more than 6 days old it could stay in while using it for treatment. Not supposed to affect the bb, is that right? More information please.

200mg/per 10 gallons of water. 5 day treatment was good for me. I did a water change half way through and removed as much of the dead stuff as possible. It should not affect your bio filter, though you can see a spike in ammonia because of the increased breakdown of protein from the stuff dying off. That is why a water change partway through is a good idea. It was really easy. You will see a BIG difference after the first dose. I did not use carbon, just did a BIG water change at the end and all was good. Have never had another problem.

As a side note, I found I had some dead spots in my tank with sluggish to no movement. I think this is what lead to my problem.

i think everyone is missing the point personally. this is a low light setup with med/high lighting over it. there will be problems/algae once the cyano is cured anyway, imho. there is 80 watts of lighting, an hob filter and no mention of c02 in 3 threads so far concerning this issue... on a 29gal tank.

this is a low light setup and cyano is usually easy to kick in low light... except that is not low light numbers... (i say usually because there are different forms of cyano)

option a...
kill some of that light or raise the fixture higher above the tank and adjust as necessary... and follow whatever regimen you decide to kill your cyano (i think raising/killing some lights might actually do the trick by itself... and might just be a good indicator of where to keep your lights to avoid future issues) (i did mention i could induce and rid my tank of cyano at will using basically just this and/or removing nitrates from my water column in your other thread)

option b...
new filter that won't off gas co2 and inject accordingly... and follow whatever regimen you decide to kill your cyano

Maracyn, is an anti-biotic. It only kills the cyno, not other algaes.

She needs to fix the cyno problem first.

got that part...
that's what i'm talking about doing.

if she wants to use the maracyn that's her choice. i kicked cyano by controlling my parameters... light first, then nutrients. after that it was just shading my lower light plants with higher light ones. that resulted in no algae or cyano that i can see.

i think that 80 watts may be a little much for the tank less it were suspended from the ceiling or the tank carbon supplemented. this suggests to me that killing the cyano might sway the nutrient deficiency/imbalance in another direction leading to another problem, more cyano later, algae, etc. since the lights will still demand higher uptake rates than a non-carbon supplemented tank can support. this means to me that nutrients somehow... or carbon would be the bottle neck. you don't want that, you want your lights bottlenecking your growth since light is a nutrient to other organisms... including cyano... and it's almost inevitable that whatever you create a good environment for will show up or back up.

i'm compelled to think that excel might be able to keep up with the demand but injection would be fairly useless with an hob on the tank.

i, personally don't agree with using any antibiotics/drugs/etc. when there's an alternative since it all goes somewhere when it's done. i found an alternative for me and/or low light tanks...

i have not seen proof it's bad enough that it needs drastic measures so i cannot safely make that assumption. i cannot deny it on those grounds either. we'll have to let her judge that for herself until we see some pics... unless there's another thread i missed.

then again 80 watts of what lighting...

understood... 200mg erythromycin per packet

I am using excel.I can use a bit more, once a day maybe? Thank you Done for your input. I will see what I can do about the lights. Would removing one bulb so it's 60 over 29 be better? a shorter duration maybe? You have my attention. I'm through with the antibiotic did a 50% water change should I do another 50% on Saturday?
