I ran by my local aquarium store this afternoon and browsed the fish just to see what they had gotten in and they'd set up a new tank. They had a 75 gallon with about half a dozen 6" oscars, a couple tinfoil barbs, a couple bala sharks, some jack dempsey's and the biggest pacu I've ever seen in my life! This thing was pushing 14" or better. I've seen plenty of 10" or so Pacu's in aquariums or LFS's but never seen one this big. They said they'd set up the tank just to show people these little fish do in fact get bigger. I guess they have lots of people trying to put Oscars in small tanks. I asked her why she hadn't gotten any bigger oscars than 6" though. Anyway, a pretty cool sight. Kyle

Yeah I've seen those....

Yeah the ones at New Orleans were awesome!!! However I think those are black pacus?? or something like that. I don't think they are the same as the ones in the pet trade. But they all definitely get large.

Yeah the black pacus are gigantic, I think they get over 55 inches. The reds can go to 20 inches in home aquaria- I havent seen any get bigger than that except in public aquariums. Haha that pet store's 75 gallon is going to be dominated pretty soon though.

never knew about the black pacu. This one is about black with a reddish belly but any pacu I've ever seen over 6" was this coloring so I just assumed they were all the same as the smaller aquarium fish. hmmm, KYle

My neighbour's pacu is 37" and counting.

you mean this one ? :)

BTW there's only one tank, one really BIG tank. I tried to get a better shot of the whole tank but closeups are all I could get. Try to get 75 people to move out of the way for a shot....

they don't even get that big, max 36" and that's pushing it. The ones at the vancouver aquarium have been there since I was old enough to remember and they're only about 30-32", and the black pacu gets larger than the red pacu.
