My 5 yr old 18” fire eel jumped out of the tank Nd is hurt. He has some open wounds. We put melfix in and a little salt. He isn’t swimming or eating well. It’s been 2 days…any suggestions?

Do lots of big water changes to both help it heal & to remove the salt. Think about how much it hurts us to get salt in a wound...I've never used melafix & have some doubts about how well it works for serious problems.

Water changes can help a LOT! Daily if you can, try for 50% or as much as you reasonably can. Don't worry about it not eating yet, fish can go for at least a week or 2 without issues. Be sure to remove ALL uneaten food when doing WCs, offer only small amounts. Clean water can be a miracle, good luck!

Let us know how he does...Oh & welcome to AC.

I think you may have to have 5 (or maybe 10?) posts to be able to post pics but it may help us help you & your eel to see just how bad it may be.

He is still not eating. Day 7 of the Melanie. Sounds look better but now a fish in the tank has a white eye. So I was thinking of using maracyn two for that. We are doing a 40% water change tomorrow. And the. Chou got we would start this other treatment. It worked well once. We had gotten some live ghost shrimp for our eels and we have an African frog. But they brought disease. To this medicine worked well for that. But I am concerned about using the 2 different meds. Although they won’t be at the same time. And I am very worried about him not eating. his mouth is open all the time. So if a worm falls in there he swallows it. It seems. He was pretty hurt. Wounds do look better but…sigh.

I understand Melanie is spell check for melafix but I can't figure out Chou, sorry. Not being critical at all, but maybe English is not your first language? Where do you live (in a vague way)? Country? State? Near a big city? Many of us are in the US but we're fairly international in some ways.

If you have a syringe or food bulb baster maybe you can shoot a bit of food in his mouth a little bite at a time. But like I said, he'll be ok without food for at LEAST another week. Don't panic!

It seems like clean water is helping, continue doing daily water changes or as best you can, as much as you can. What size is your tank?

The white eye can be helped by...you guessed it, water changes.

Have you tested your tank water for ammonia, nitrite & nitrate? Please tell us the numbers if you can, not just ok, we need to know actual numbers & the test used.

I "think" you can post to youtube & attach here but that's not something I do. I know some new people can post pics...but I don't know how to do that  I'm an old non-techie, sorry again.

Bottom line: change more water more often. Skip the salt & melafix, I don't think they're helping.
