I have a Hexagonal 21 Litre (4.6 Gallon) Fish Tank for which I am going to use for tropical fish, mainly Tetras.

I have been looking at the Hydro Ario air pumps, mainly the 1 and 2 series.

The Ario 1 says it will only work in a tank of a depth 25cm (10") but mine is 35cm (14") - which would be the Ario 2.

The problem I have is that the Ario 1 is for tank between 10-50 litres, and a Ario 2 is for between 50-100 litres.

I have been told to go for a Ario 2 because of the depth, but I dont know what effect having a pump for a larger fish tank will have. I was told that if I put a long air stone on it would help to dispel the bubbles, but where a air stone would go on one of these I wouldnt know. If I did go for a Ario 2 I would go for one with a coloured light on.

Can anyone help?
Look forward to your reply

a 4.6 gallon tank wont be enough space for tetras, unless you get neons, and even then it will be a bit crowded, and then that all you can get. most other tetras will get to big. and since your tank is hexagonal, it has less room to swim, so it can support less fish.
unless it is extremely tall and thin, the Airo 1 should be fine. i have an Eclipse Hex 5 and it works fine on it.

Opposing point of view. The air pump has to overcome the weight of the water (head pressure). If the aero 1 is designed for 10" of water and you are using in 14" of water, you are forcing the pump to work 40% harder to get air to the stone. The Aero 2 will not have to work as hard. The negative to Aero 2 might be too much air. Could you buy a simple valve or even crimpt the hose and secure with rubber bands to regulate the airflow.

I do know that the Hydor Ario pumps have a valve at the top to regulate the air flow to the pump.

Appreciate everyones advice. Thanks.

PS. Will be looking for nice little tropical fish, that dont grow too big.

just keep the bubler 2'' above the bottom....
