One thing to look into is trying to breed other Hypancistrus species before attempting zebras - Queen Arabesque (L260) and King Tigers (L066) are both nice, and a heck of a lot cheaper place to start ($15-30 per fish).

I have never even seen a zebra pleco in real life. I really wish they weren't so darned expensive. They're absolutely gorgeous fish in every picture I've ever seen of them. I would definitely want some experience first though. I would hate to spend that much money and have them either fail to breed or die.
I remember seeing zebra pleco's at the lfs long ago, probably a year or two after they were first available. No one knew anything about sexing them, much less breeding. I passed them up, not wanting to watch them die from my ignorance (like a few impulse buys in the past.) :wall:
