I-35W Bridge

It said something like 30-35 deaths on the radio here  (hope I heard wrong)

From a local news source...

"Hennipin County Medical Center doctors were treating at least 28 patients. Dr. Joseph Clinton said at least seven people were killed. At an evening news conference, he said he knew for certain that one person had drown.

Dr. Clinton said he was sure there were more victims of drowning at the scene, but he didn't have specific information or numbers.

HCMC was in full emergency mode by 6:15 p.m. The hospital declared this an emergency situation and that means other hospitals in the area dedicated resources to help HCMC. They have seen 22 patients with non-critical injuries, 6 with critical and 1 fatality.

North Memorial in Robbinsdale reported at least two patients. The University of Minnesota Medical Center says it received five patients via ambulance and that another 25 have walked into to the Emergency Room."

Minnesota bridge inspectors found no structural flaws last year or the year before in the interstate bridge that collapsed into the Mississippi River in Minneapolis on Wednesday, Governor Tim Pawlenty said.

'They notified us (that) from an engineering standpoint the deck might need to be rehabilitated or replaced in 2020 or beyond, but no immediate or structural problems with the bridge,' Pawlenty said at a news conference in Minneapolis."

updated later this morning said that there were not 7 dead, but only four. hopefully that's as high as it gets..

From the CNN Story

A 2001 study conducted by the Minnesota Department of Transportation found "several fatigue problems" in the bridge's approach spans and "poor fatigue details" on the main truss.
The study suggested that the design of bridge's main truss could cause a collapse if one of two support planes were to become cracked, although it allowed that a collapse might not occur in that event. But, the study concluded, "fatigue cracking of the deck truss is not likely" and "replacement of the bridge ... may be deferred."
Two years ago, the U.S. Department of Transportation's National Bridge Inventory database said the bridge was "structurally deficient."
The Minneapolis Star Tribune quoted Jeanne Aamodt, a spokeswoman for the Minnesota Department of Transportation, as saying the department was aware of the 2005 assessment of the bridge.
The bridge received a rating of 4 on a scale of 0 to 9. A bridge receives a rating of 4 when there is "advanced section loss, deterioration."

This is truly aweful. I have a number of friends that live in Minneapolis that I will be trying to get ahold of later on tonight after the more imprtant calls have been dealth with.

*edit*
just was able to catch one of my friends online... everyone I know down there is fine...
My thoughts go out to all those affected by this disaster.

I was just watching a girl, 15 maybe, who's mom "never takes 35W home" but they havn't heard from her since 5:30 p.m. yesterday so they assume she was on the bridge. It was hard to watch her because she was trying to be strong but did break down crying.
