Excerpt from my PM earlier today: "Today, my mom found a bird egg on our lawn! It probably fell from our tree, which is really tall. I wanted to put it back in the nest, but we couldn't see one. So we took it inside. After research online, I'm pretty sure its a house sparrow egg. There's a tiny crack spot in the shell, and my mom made a mini-nest for it in a plastic bowl. She put some cloth from an old shirt as lining, and we surrounded the egg with shredded cotton balls. Then we folded the corner of the cloth just over it, and put it by the window (but not in the direct sunlight). I read that they have to be REALLY hot! And I've been turning it often. I shone a flashlight underneath, and it's this yellow blob. So I guess it's not going to make it if its just a yolk right now. Still, I'm not turning on the A/C right now in my house because I don't want my little bird to freeze. What do you think I should do?"

Update: It's nighttime now, and it's a little cooler. There is definitely no way to keep this egg warm, since I don't have an incubator. Also, the A/C is going to be turned on soon. Should I just give up trying to save it? It's just a little yolk right now, already without its mother...:( Please help!

you can use nail polish to cover up the crack...i think...thats what i read in the book while i was in the avian hobby

Certain plastics insulate really well, and may keep the heat from getting to the egg. I think if you can find something that you can put the heating pad in the bottom of, with the rest of the setup the same (minus the plastic outer container) that would probably be better. What temp did you find that this guy should be kept at?

the following are layers from bottom to top:

so, instead of
-heat pad
-plastic aquarium
-thin dish towel
-plastic basket
-cloth
-egg surrounded by cotton balls,

it should be
-heat pad
-plastic basket
-cloth
-egg surrounded by cotton balls?

the basin is the type of plastic in this type of tank: http://video.zootoo.com/prod/100000/thumbs175/prod_100520.jpg
the plastic basket I'm using is made out of the same type of plastic in the lid (see above link)

i can't quite remember, although when I was busily researching house sparrows I think I came across varying info of 80 to 100 degrees
