So I was so excited last night I went and got all my fish. Four and a half weeks I waited for the cycle to finish. This is what I came up with (46G):
6 Guppies (2 male, 4 female)
6 Rummy-nose Tetras (True I was told)
4 German Blue Rams (The more I look I think I have 1 male and 3 female, ultimately I probably only want one breeding pair but they are pretty young and hard to tell what sex)
3 Otocinclus Catfish
3 African Dwarf Frogs
2 Bamboo Shrimp

1 Red Ludwigia
1 Cabomba

My fiance has dubbed the shrimp his favorites. I drempt last night all my fish died overnight. Luckily there were no actual deaths when I woke up.

I really wanted to get a small school of cardinals but I'm thinking I'm pretty much at capacity. I thought maybe I'd get a couple more Oto Cats. I also think I might want one bigger fish as a centerpiece like a gourami but still not sure. Do you think I have room for a gourami? I will also be adding cherry shrimp...

Do you find it common that stores won't buy fish back? One store will take a fish back in 7 days. If they die all the places will refund in 7-15 days. But most won't buy back if there are problems with aggression or other reasons. I found that kind of unexpected.

Yes...A LONG time. I can't believe there are actually fish in my tank after researching and preparing for a couple years.

Whats that gourami in your avatar?

I'll give you a hearty "HUZZAH!" for finishing your cycle and getting the tank stocked :) sounds like a good bunch of critters to me :) does seem close to capacity if not at capacity, but I'll always defer to the more experienced ;)

I wish the LFS here will have some german blue rams when I'm ready to finish stocking my tank, but I've never seen them in the area before. That's a mighty fine looking species :)

well congrats and enjoy the fruits of a long wait :thm:

I was actually pretty surprised that I was able to find the rams so easily. I got 2 at two different stores.

Very cool :)

BTW, I like your cat. A friend of mine has one almost the same, but it's a white variety. I think they paid a lot of money for it, but it's cool to have a polka dotted cat running around ;)

Yah that would be a snow leopard bengal. I love them. I don't know yet if my girl carries for snow but its possible.

I think I'm going to cut back to 2 rams. I'm going to study them some more and post pictures. Maybe get some feedback on which are female and male and which look the best in quality. I had no idea they can fluctuate their color so easily. When the guy stuck the net into the tank all of a sudden all the fish drained their color and they all looked alike!

I've heard a lot from people that in the first few days their rams die. How long do you wait to know they are fully acclimated to your tank? I'm hoping they pull through but it sounds like they don't always give off much sign before going.

It depends on how healthy the rams are to begin with. I've heard that it's not uncommon for rams to already be ill before purchase. Of the two I bought recently, I had to return one due to a slightly concave stomach, and then returned the new one due to a curve in the spine. I ended up losing the final one I traded for within the first couple of weeks (to ich that was brought in with a new platy.) :( The one I didn't trade out is doing quite well a month later. I'll get a male in a while....and hopefully will have better luck with it.
