"It was a buch of long green leafed plants (straight up, long as in 10 inches or less)" made me think of Amazon Sword, which I bought in a tube at a petco in Fall of 2006. The longest leaves were probably 5" or so, and it happens that two plants came in one tube. I planted them in ceramic pots in common acquarium gravel since I had read they can spread and I didn't think I wanted that. They still live, with old leaves going (I pinch them off) and new leaves growing to replace the old.
While I've gotten duds (terrestrial) plants (yes, Mondo grass) from such tubes at Petco, I've also gotten a Java Fern (which has dark, emerald-colored leaves that can get 5-7" long, depending on the size of the tube/cost (larger = more $). The one I got at the same time as the Swords had "babies" right away, but the plant has been deteriorating/blackening for the last 6 months or so. Mom and babies in my 10G haven't outright died, but they don't look real happy. I intended to replace the main plant early last fall, but the ones at Petsmart seemed to have the same problem so maybe it was world-wide bad batch or just "something going around".
As the tubes do have names for the plants within them (sometimes both common and Latin, sometimes actually
correct), in the future, write down the names, research them on line first, and you may be able to save some money. I don't practice what I preach, though, since I'd have to make a long round trip by city bus to do the research, so researching before hand, making a list of common aquarium plants you'd like to try, may be a good idea
