I just saw this in yahoo news, and was kind of shocked.

DENVER - A homeowners association in southwestern Colorado has threatened to fine a resident $25 a day until she removes a Christmas wreath with a peace sign that some say is an anti-Iraq war protest or a symbol of Satan.

Some residents who have complained have children serving in Iraq, said Bob Kearns, president of the Loma Linda Homeowners Association in Pagosa Springs. He said some residents have also believed it was a symbol of Satan. Three or four residents complained, he said.

"Somebody could put up signs that say drop bombs on Iraq. If you let one go up you have to let them all go up," he said in a telephone interview Sunday.

Lisa Jensen said she wasn't thinking of the war when she hung the wreath. She said, "Peace is way bigger than not being at war. This is a spiritual thing."

Jensen, a past association president, calculates the fines will cost her about $1,000, and doubts they will be able to make her pay. But she said she's not going to take it down until after Christmas.

"Now that it has come to this I feel I can't get bullied," she said. "What if they don't like my Santa Claus."

The association in this 200-home subdivision 270 miles southwest of Denver has sent a letter to her saying that residents were offended by the sign and the board "will not allow signs, flags etc. that can be considered divisive."

The subdivision's rules say no signs, billboards or advertising are permitted without the consent of the architectural control committee.

Kearns ordered the committee to require Jensen to remove the wreath, but members refused after concluding that it was merely a seasonal symbol that didn't say anything. Kearns fired all five committee members.

What has happened to holiday cheer?

you have got to be kidding me.... a peace sign is anything but a sign from the devil

its not protesting against our soldiers, its protesting about war itself so i dont know what the people's problems were.

next people are going to whine about the magnetic ribbons on cars that say "peace not war" etc.etc.

So I wonder if it is offensive to sing "peace on earth, good will to men" in the Christmas song--I don't know anyone who doesn't want peace in Iraq. I imagine most of the troops would like peace in Iraq!

This doesn't suprise me, though, I have students complain about things I've already changed.

IMO if people are going to whine it should be about the things on cars, not a Christmas decoration. But still... If it bothers you, don't look at it. lol
i know right, there are plenty of more offensive things that acctually mean something bad that should have the finger pointed at, not a wreath in the shape of a peace symbol.

I don't think the issue is what the sign is, but rather that there is a sign. My sister lives in a housing subdivision near Colorado Springs, and the by-laws of subdivisions are VERY extensive. You are limited to the number of horses to one per person per household and no composting (their horse manure goes out with the trash every week), garages and sheds must match the color and trim of the house, all vehicles must fit in garages, and pink flamingo lawn ornaments and all Christmas decorations that move are specifically prohibited. I think they also limit the number and colors of Christmas lights.. there are pages and pages of rules (all very specific) that I don't exactly remember.

The poor lady probably has a wreath that is 2" bigger than the allowed size or something dumb like that.

I could never live there. I would eventually TRY to annoy the neighbors. :joke:

To me there is a marked difference between number of horses or having a ten foot waving santa and a wreath shaped like a peace sign. Number of horses is dictated by the county or city already--so housing developments aren't that far out on that one. In my opinion, if you can have any wreaths you should be able to have a peace sign shapped wreath.

The problem that I saw with the article is that EVERY member of the board said there was NO problem with the wreath, and then the president fired them so he could push his agenda.

People are ridiculous sometimes. It's a holiday wreath...shaped like a peace sign...makes me think "peace on Earth, good will towards man"...why does it suddenly become a comment on Iraq?
