I hate Platy's! The one my wife picked out gave my P. Taenaitus Dropsy. I hope the Jungle Clear works. I am now treating the whole tank just in case. Wish me luck.

+1 for quarantining all new livestock.

It wasn't new. But every fish illness I have had has started with live bearers qnd end up killing off a cichlid. Never had any problems with fish illness until I brought home these darn Platys.

how long did you quarantine?

Why would you have livebearers in with cichlids? It's not the platy's fault, I'd blame the fish store for selling a sick fish. How long did you quarantine?

my platys have never been sick, I just received molly's and there in quarantine for 1 month. then they will go into my tank with guppy, and platy. I would not blame your platy, I would blame you. never put a store bought fish in with other fish, always quarantine or your asking for trouble. and lets not even go there about putting him in with a cichild OYE

If I am not mistaken, dropsy is actually edema, most commonly indicating renal failure in fish. Its not like ich that's contagious. You can't really "catch" kidney failure.
It may have been the final result of some other bacterial or viral infection that DID come from the platy, but its not a given that the platy is to blame.

Unfortunately, 90% of fish that end up with dropsy can not be saved. I hope this guy can. Good luck.

We've all made the mistake of skipping QT, so lets lighten up on Blackstar. He obviously feels bad about this already.

thats why you come here to learn and to understand what fish go with what and how to care for them. we have all made mistakes yes, thank god this site is here for people to know whats and how to do it. with out this place and people telling it Straight I would be screwed right now.

It's a Dwarf Cichlid. I raise Dwarf Cichlids and the P.Taeniatus were 1" fry When I got them. Now they are 2" Fry. The Dwarf Cichlid that died from Dropsy was a Long fin GBR. I have had the Platy for six months. The GBR dies four month ago. The P. Taenaitus where in my 55 community tank until I got my other 55 set up. But I ran into some issues and I anm still trying to stabilze that tank. As I stated before i never had any illness issues until I brought home the Platys. I think they just carry the illness in their genes.

sadly more often than not dropsy is fatal. But if your problems seem to stem from lifebearers and your missus wants live bearers why not set her up her own tank so that they are not kept in with your cichlids?
