The Coralife skimmers i run HOB I do not use the diffuser, call me crazy but I have not had micro bubble issues. That setup will disrupt the surface tension. Back in the day we used to place an airstone about 1" or so below the surface to break that crap up LOL. Now you "get the overflow box". The airstone is an easy solution, however it turns into salt spray nightmare after a while. If you remove your box, remove that stupid flex tube (or should I call it the random overflow tube). Basically what you have is surface tension that is keeping ionically charged particles stuck to the surface (kinda like the way a skimmer works). Then diatoms grow on this "skin" as an available surface, you need to disrupt the surface tension it will push those particles into your skimmer which will remove them.
