I Hit the Motherload –*Ideas anyone?

Hi All,

I'm currently running a 20g Hex, and had been waiting until I moved into a bigger place to upgrade. Well, last night, thanks to Craiglist, I hit the mother of all aquarium deals (for NYC at least). I'm a little overwhelmed with everything I got and was wondering if anyone has some good ideas for what I need and what I have no use for (AKA, stuff I should sell). The setup is for saltwater, but for time and cost stake, I think I'll be sticking to fresh for now, but I'm wanting to go BIG.

Included:
40 Gallon Bowfront Glass
Eheim Pro II
R/O Machine (I think 35 G.P.D)
Hang-on Refugium (with 18" fluorescent)
3 - powerheads (2 small, and an Aquaclear 70)
2X96w lights (1 actinic and 1 normal)
Ground Probe
Heater
Tons of chemical and such

Those are the main items, but he also included a junk load of scrubbers, testing strips, marine salt, etc. I am partial to aquarium plants, so I think I'll be having plenty of aquatics.

Thanks for any suggestions/advice.

BTW, all for $225.

Thanks in advance.

Nice score! I'm picking up a 72G bowfront I found on CL tomorrow!

You don't need the r/o machine, refugium (though you could probably set it up if you were so inclined), I doubt you will need all of the powerheads in that tank. Light is nice, but you will need new bulbs. With that much juice you could will run into algae problems, so you may just want to buy a new light depending on what you want to set up. Not sure which of the canister filters you got, but I'm assuming it will be good for that tank. If it's big enough, you won't need the Aquaclear.

Good luck.

well it sounds like the person you got this from had it set up for a salt tank. thats why they had so many powerheads and the actinic lights, as well as the refugium and RO. if u wanted, u could set up a reef tank with those supplies.

Keep the light if it has separate switches for the two bulbs. Just buy one new 6700k bulb for plants. Instead of getting a new light use only one bulb, buying a second bulb if you add pressurized co2.

The RO maker maybe useful depending on future tank inhabitants vs. you tap water parameters. My tap water has a high PH of 7.8 which forces me to do more water changes of lesser amounts on my discus tank. Otherwise the PH of 6.6 due to co2 increases to 7.2 with a 50% water change. It seems to stress everyone out, forcing me to do 25% every three days.

The power heads are nice to keep better water circulation (no dead spots). The eheim could be rigged with diy spraybar system to spread out the flow. The power heads are more versatile.

The saltwater only chemicals and refugium should find a new home. Post all the specific details on the products back on CL. I'm sure some saltwater person will make you a good offer. Those alone could get you $50 back on you investment. I usually take extras to the auctions of my local aquarium societies.
