I was totally sold on Nib's black markings until recently and today after I fed him I realized that they were almost gone. We've only had him a couple of weeks. I have assumed it was damage that was healing because I don't think a naturally coloring would fade so fast would it?[YT]UXxW4kNGkjk[/YT] to [YT]jptgMhrrINk[/YT]compare to my earlier posting on the illness board. Would such a rapid change mean a the black marks were healing damage?

Yes.. goldies heal very fast when they're well cared for. Looks like you're doing a great job! Nice going.

I've been meaning to find an excuse to post pictures of my two little orandas, and I might dig them out later. Both started dark as could be, but one of them is quickly turning orange. If Nib is changing from healing then that's great, but it is amazing how quickly dark colors can leave goldfish naturally as well.

he sure is a cutie! looks like he loves life!

Ory when I first got him, and now. He has a few bits of black left, but they are vanishing faster than I can record it. I was really worried at first, and kinda upset, but he isn't who he is because of his colour :) and I'm sure you can say the same about Nibbles!

I love your tank deco...I just put some plants in mugs tonight to try keep maintenance down, and I much prefer your look! Also loving the pebbles. Nice one!

The glass cups are just votive candle holders. I got them at WalMart here, but maybe ASDA has them? They were like $.68. I did the cups for the plants as I have a RUGF and the roots could mess up the filter plate if I planted them.
That is such a major transformation for Ory. I would never have believed that it is the same fish! I do love them black like that (reminds me of puppies for some reason), but the yellow on Ory is stunning.
I think every Oranda we ever have will be named Nibble. My everytime my kids see a red/orange Oranda they call it Nibble. But this one is earning the nickname Nibble Piggy!

One of the great things in this hobby is watching your little friends grow, and sometimes transform before your very eyes. These are my two fantails (that Petsmart sold as orandas, though I have yet to see the signs). They were both a deep brown/black when I got them, and one of them has changed this much in about a month:

your kidding corrieberry, that black fish AND the gold fish are the same fish?!?!?! wow! do black moores change too?

Bea, black is a very unstable color with goldfish. Not all black moors change their black colors but a lot do start changing to red/orange from the belly as the starting point. My own oranda, Velvet was black at first but she is now changing her colors that it seems to be olive green, chocolate and even a tinge of orange that I was confused a few times what exactly was her color. When the black color fades due to lack of sunlight, this is called melanophore migration where the melanin is not sustained but instead changed by another cell color.
