hi there, i bought a snail bout 2 months ago and now i have about 40, they just keep breeding, i cant get rid of them, is there a fish that will eat them?? i need help
There are lots of fish that eat snails. But many are unsuitable to all but the biggest tanks. What size tank do you have and what fish are already in it.
Generally snails explode in population due to excess food. Perhaps you can try feeding your fish less food. ALgae is also a snail food source so if you have lots in the tank the snails will breed quicker. And a gravel vacuum will help to keep gunk out of the substrate, another food source for snail.
Clown Loaches Are Particularly Fond Of Smaller Snails, Extracting Them From Their Shells With Their Pointed Mouths. They Can Be Used To Help Control The Snail Population....
Yes, clown loaches and many loaches are great at eating snails. But CLown loaches can get over 8 inches in length as do many loaches. So if your tank isn't big enough to hold them long term then they are not a good option.
Don't add a fish just to eat snails. Add the fish also because you like them and they make a good additon to your tank.
Plus many loaches are very long lived, well over 10 years or more.
As TKOS said, snail overpopulation is a result of too much waste/food in the tank.
The snails cannot over produce if there is not food to sustain them.
Frequent water changes, along with a good gravel vac-ing will help.
Try sticking a piece of lettuce in the tank when the lights go out. The snails should flock to it. Then take it and the snails out a couple hours later or in the morning.
I agree with the above post, don't add any more fish just to solve the snail problem. The problem is a result of waste build-up and overfeeding, adding another fish will only make the problem worse. You may want to look into seeing if your tank is overstocked.
B) Had a snail sucks. It'll kill a lot more than snails. And even when it takes all the snails out you'll be stuck with quite a bit of rotting bio material in the tank. Pulling the tank apart would be a better idea than had a snail.
I'd use the lettuce trick.
Buying loaches simply to clean snails is a bad idea. It's bad fish keeping, if that's the only reason you're getting the fish and they need to be in groups of 3+ and they grow large (as do most loaches).
