I need help with a math question

ok start at a population of 100,

(.01y)(100)=200 (solve for y)

I think thats how it is..... its 12.30am, im tired, i'll try helping you tommorow, something doesnt seem right with my equation....

btw i didnt look at wikipedia, i wanna see if i can do it without help.....

yet you asked for help... i dont get it.

Use a simple excel spread sheet with a cell equals 1.01 times the cell above it.

if this is like exponential growth, you need to use logarithms.

there is an equation, if I recall from microbiology, that is something like:

Y = Y0^ekt,

where:

Y = population you end up with
Yo = population you started with

e= eulers constant (2.781..something)

t = time, which is what we are solving for...

so, you would plug in say 50 for your starting value, 100 for your ending value, and solve for t by taking the logarithm of both sides.

I just can't remember what K is.

maybe someone else can help..

Right - the compounding means you need the formula w/ the exponent. Excel has these built in (search NPT functions), substitute people for $ (isn't that usually done the other way around?) and you're there.
