Start all over. After reading this thread, click the link Aquaria Central(right above where it says I Need help at the top of the page). From the home page, go to the freshwater newbie forum just like you did to post your question. Start at the top and read the posts that have the word "sticky" before them. One or more of the posts are about cycling your tank. And don't worry, you aren't annoying. NOBODY is as clueless as me! LOL!
