Don't confuse messy with inhumane. Any method that prevents the animal from suffering needlessly is by definition Humane. There are easy humane methods (Clove oil) and there are difficult messy humane methods (Cutting snipping, smashing, bashing, etc.)

The are debateably humane or inhumane methods (freezer)

I have read that the most humane way to euthanize a goldfish is to place it in some water in the freezer. This will slowly slow down the metabolism while the water gets colder and the fish will not suffer long.
