Well, I am getting a little stir crazy being a Stay at home mom for the past 6 years sooooo....Last week the manager at my LFS offered me a job there. So I am now considered one of those "idiot local fish store employees". Let me tell ya after just two days there....fish customers can be SCARY! LOL

I love it though and I'm having so much fun. They specialize in salt water too and I get to learn tons about it. I'm excited and really lucky that I am working with some REALLY knowledgable people who can teach me so much. Not once have they ever gave me advice that when I came home and look it up, isn't almost exactly what they said. I get to work Mon-Friday 8 am to noon. Perfect for the kids too...they won't even know I'm not home while they are at school. This is the first job I have ever had that I am really excited to do. Actually with the cost of gas and childcare for the summer...I will be working for less than twenty bucks a week  Oh well...I am doing it to learn about the hobby and have fun. Plus I'm a neat freak and they could really use that there! LOL. I am actually planning out a new saltwater reef tank. I want to not only learn..but do and have some real experience with it. Oh...good employee discount and with the pet count around here...that's a megga bonus :thm:

Anyone got any good advice? I have always worked in upper management and this is a new experience for me...but much more fun than anything else.

I don't have advice...but where will you be? You never know when I might be in the area.
Also...in figuring how much you will make...will you get an employee discount? that should count for something! On the other hand at a net profit of $20...will you be actually making anything? I could spend that weekly if I worked in a fish shop!

Sometimes the mental ocupation is worth more than makeing lots of money especially if it is something you enjoy. Only makeing 20$ a week is better than what you might do if you volunteered someplace. I'm not bashing volunteering, but if you can break even while learning and keeping yourself entertained that is worth something.

I don't think you need advice, if anything people should follow your lead! Don't everyone charge off to your lfs demanding work......I mean you've done the best bit in finding a job you like and enjoy doing. It doesn't matter about the pay, amount of work, etc aslong as you enjoy being there. A big well done to you!

I'd kill for a job that i wanted to get up to......i would actually kill.......maybe even twice.....maybe!

Thanks all. Yep, the employee discount sure will help out more than the actual pay. I spend a ton there a month anyways. I guess they just figured I was there so much anyways that they might as well put me on payroll. It's just a mom&pop type place...lots of people from the same family working there and they do make it feel like a family type atmosphere. I guarantee that I will probably always spend WAY more than I make. I guess they figured thats why I would be a safe hire! LOL

BTW Nursie...its east central Indiana. If you are ever making a trip up I69 let me know. I would LOVE to meet you and buy you a cup of coffee! My momma is a nurse and I almost followed in her footsteps. Instead I became an EMT/Ambulance driver right out of high school to put myself thru college. Didn't work in the health field after that. HARD WORK. Thumbs up to you on a tough job that NO nurse ever gets paid enough for!

I was actually considering asking if I could volunteer there a few days a week when they offered me the job out of the blue. SO COOL! Lol

Don't forget there are tax benefits for two-income families that are not available when you stay at home.

East Indiana? I'll let you know. Hubby is up to some Civil war related event over by Indy later this spring/early summer. Who knows, I may go with.

69? Does that go up through Angola? I spend several vacations there on Crooked Lake.

The same would happen to me if I worked at a LFS. Or even worse, at Radio Shak. If I ever have to work in an electronics store, I'll be broken all month long.

MKML, congrats in your new job. Hope things run smoothly.

Wow, major congratulations!! That is so wonderful--life can just fall into place so perfectly sometimes!!! Sounds like you'll really enjoy it, learn even more, and, OH, the new aquatic communities you'll be setting up, too. It's hard to resist stuff you sell in retail when you love it!!! Good luck, and don't be surprised when the public shows their butts--it's not worth getting upset for. That's my only advice, from working retail for alot of years. Otherwise, revel in it!!! Buona fortuna. :cool2:
