Now that the stuff has claimed my last fish, how long can ich exist in a tank with no hosts? I don't want to put anything in there until I'm sure that it is gone.

Pick up some clear ammonia so you can feed the bacteria during this fishless time. Otherwise, they will die off, and you will have to recycle the tank before adding more fish. Not to mention, the ammonia won't be good for the ich!
