These polyps/ anemones began on a new live rock that was home to a new anemone. I cannot find anything on the net that looks quite like it. Capable of retracting quickly and completely. About 1/2 cm wide, has grown rapidly since yesterday. Is it beneficial or nuisance? Thanks!

I am not saying you are wrong as I cannot look into their tank. However if it does not have some sort of encursting base then you might have reason to be concerned.

well, no encrusting base, and it does look more like your first picture, rajun. although it only has about 5 or 6 "tentacles"... how do you tell the difference exactly?

thanks, am throwing it away. how quickly would it spread in the aquarium, and what else can i do to to stop it? it has been visible only 2 days. i have a uv sterilizer?

Get some tweezers and gently grasp hold of the stem, and pull it very slowly...as the pulling pressure starts, the foots usually release, and you can just throw it then...Not much else you can do to stop them....a UV wont do anything..

Thanks Reefscape, much appreciated, I have just before your reply already thrown away the entire live rock (it was very small). Is there much chance it would have spread through the water (only been in the tank a few days), or do they spread more using the surfaces? Thanks again...

Although the pic isn't the greatest, it looks to me like there are at least 7 tentacles on each of those. Star polyps are not true corals but Octocorals, so named because they possess tentacles in multiples of 8 as opposed to true corals that have them in multiples of 6. Could be a nem, but again the pic isn't good enough to be sure.
