Hello, I've been on the boards for a little while now and am wondering if anyone can help me ID this eel I have. I believe it is a European Eel, but it could be an American eel from what I can tell.

thanks for any help! :bowing:

I used to keep a European eel a long time back. It certainly looks like one but could be an American eel as the difference between them is the number of vertabrae in the backbone.

They are the most excellent acrobats so keep a tight lid on your tank. They can also grow to over 4 feet in length. European eels can also live more than 50 years in captivity!

It looks pretty durned similar cdawson. Thanks for the help! Is that Anguilla Anguilla?

I figured it was a Euro-eel, just wanted to make sure none of the residents didn't think it was something else I'd missed in my blanket search.

Honestly I feel bad keeping the poor thing because of their crazy life cycle(I think this is why the escape so much), but it's not like he/she can be let go. :(

The only real info I've been able to find is biology study info, nothing on aquarium care though. If anyone knows of any sites, please send me a link!

It's actually a gymnothorax Tile, a high end BW to marine moray that is often sold as FW. In FW it will suffer and eventually die over a period of time.

Yeah I used to use European eels as pike bait. It looks so similar.

Last night I got to take a really good look at the eel when I was siphoning and he's definitely an American/European Eel. Which one, I have not a clue though :D Thanks for your help

Does anyone know of any resources for taking care of these guys in an aquarium? I can't find anything online except biologist's information, which is about them living in streams and the ocean...mine lives at my house :)

I got this guy at the LPS and it was sold as a Ropefish. I bought another a few weeks later, but he died. He was sold as a Spaghetti Eel. I knew it wasn't a spaghetti eel, as I've had those before and they were tiny and see-thru. n00b pet store people... :mad2
