I would agree with this last statement. dp's are not shoaling fish, so having a lot of them in a 55 gal would be a waste. They are also aggressive among themselves, as well as toward other species, and I think if you wanted to fill the entire tank, they would end up fighting more than anything.

I agree with Plah, you would be able to put a few, but not many. You could set up a nice community tank with your specfications, but I would recommend looking up and deciding what kind of fish interest you and then ask us about compatibility and numbers. Good luck.

thanks guys! yall are all very helpful and friendly, which is rare to find on message boards!

but say I was to put one dwarf puffer in the aquarium...what are some compatible fish besides ottos? (i have researched ottos do well with these lil guys)

Not too much else is compatible with dp's. The ones that tend to do best with them are bottom feeders, that stay out of their way. Besides otos, quite a few folks have had success with elongated loaches like dojo or khuli. However, that would make your tank "bottom heavy" with not many water column species. The latter tend to get torn up by dp's, so the only things you'd have swimming around would be a couple tiny puffers.

I think if you would like suggestions on stocking you 55 with dp's and others, join dwarfpuffers.com and ask that on their forum. (Fish_0, I mentioned that site in my first post.) The people there are helpful and friendly as well :) And like I said, I'm also a member there.

But most people with dwarf puffers keep them in small tanks (20 gal or less) because not much else goes well with them, and they are so small that they would tend to get "lost" in a larger tank.

Good luck!

also, since you said you're not interested in breeding (I"m not either), just be aware that if you have at least 1 male with several females they could very possibly spawn. They lay a few large-ish eggs that then hatch into fry.

I asked how I could prevent my pair (1 boy, 1 girl) from breeding, and the response was, you can't, except by separating the sexes. But mine get along so well that I don't want to risk perturbing the balance. I was reassured that if they spawn, it's OK to just let suck up the babies with water changes.

I thought it was cruel, but they said the fry require special care (no suction filtration, special baby food) and that most die in the wild, anyway. So if I didn't make those special considerations to raise fry, that they would just die and to suck them up whenever I siphon.

So I'm just crossing my fingers and hoping they don't ever breed.

I would suggest building the 55 around a trio of Angels. Very graceful and calming.
