Hello guys! Im new! And i am a student looking to start an aquarium project!

I have a 55 gallon tank and I want to put some fish in it! This is freshwater (thanks to first poster!)

Substrate: either gravel or sand

No breeding, community tank!

What are some good combinations and how many fish could i fit in there?

I really like the dwarf puffer but i heard that they are not really community fish... any other ideas guys? help is appreciated!

Well, I think you need to be more specific. Are you looking for a freshwater, brackish water, or marine tank? Also, what kind of substrate are you planning to put into the tank? Do you want a community tank or a breed only tank? Lots of variables. Tell us a little more about the tank that you invision in your head :D

Sandy

about 55 inches woth of fish

id get

gravel

decor/driftwood

5 neon tetras

4 corys

1 dwarf gourami

2 angels

rest to you

i really like the dwarf puffer can someone give me an idea of a community including this cute little puffer?

DP those arre semi aggresive and will fin nip you prolly can put it in if you have a lots of hiding places and plants also they are so samll only 1 inch maybe your bigger fish might eat him

Mj,

Please do not take Fish_0's advice. There are much more experienced people on here than him. If you want to do a DP tank that is fine, but it will be a breed ONLY tank. DP's are far to aggressive to put in a community tank (I am going to start a DP tank in a couple months and have done extensive research and talked to people about this). Also, DP's need a diet of live snails. They do need alot of caves to establish territory (and plants), but I cannot give you advice on how many and to what ratio you should have them. I'm sure a more experienced DP owner could give you more advice about those parameters. Good luck.

Sandy

P.S. Please make sure to cycle your tank before adding any fish.

A 55g community with drawf puffers would be like this:

18 drawf puffers
20 ottos
Maybe 5-10 ghost shrimp (depending on the individual DP's).

(that's about as "community" as it gets with DP's)

However, there is a vast array of freshwater fish to chose from - you need to narrow it down more than just "freshwater","community" and "55g". To narrow it down a bit, I suggest you check out this page: http://www.aquahobby.com/e_gallery.php and give us a list of wich fish you like (and then we will tell you what can go with what and how many).

And yes, do not listen to Fish O's acvice, most all of it is incorect.

she can say this because she's read your (Fish_0's) other posts. it really sounds like you have no idea what you're doing. Quote: "Don't you get tired of lookin' at your fish? I jus' wanna get new ones"

Experienced fish keepers would know what kind of fish go well together to avoid aggression, and enjoy having long relationships with fish where we get to see them grow and thrive. I NEVER get tired of my fish, not even when I've had them for years. It only gets better because you get to know them as individuals.

sorry, back on topic.
I agree with Sandy, dwarf puffers are not community fish, no matter how they're labeled at your store. I have dp's in a species-only tank and the people at dwarfpuffers.com (of which I am also a member) will recommend the same. They are notorious for biting the fins of much larger fish and killing them due to stress. Larger fish can eat them, but it's possible that the dp's are toxic, because most puffers are. This is not known for sure as this species is new in the hobby, only 5 years or so.
