I recently got a job at a pet store gone all out fish. The owner is interested mainly in Marine, and his freshwater section is rather lacking. He said if I have any suggestions of species to add that I would be welcome to recommend them. Anyone have any ideas of some nice fw fish that will sell well?
He is also starting out with plants, so any suggestions for them would be good as well. For plants he is stocking some anacharis, red temple, cabomba, and some that look like swords or something.

Well there are species of freshwater fish that are always popular such as Guppies, Platies, Mollies, Corydoras catfish, Betta's, various tetras, various barbs. Just think about what you would recommend a beginner to keep and start from there. Another thing about most popular fish is they are usually the hardy ones that people start with so your live stock being hardy shouldn't die as often.

It's mostly hardercore fish people that go in there, so I was wondering about some more difficult and potentially interesting fish.

I have him interested in opening a brackish section, too. He's got some freshwater eel things in there, and knife fish, and some puffers (I just bought a brazilian off him the other day- $4, not bad, no?)

Well, If most people are like me, I hate seeing "The Popular" or "Common Fish" Barbs, Most Tetras, Rasboras, Mollies and such are so Blah!! you can get them anywhere! When i go to a LFS I look for the most unusual, Uncommon fish i can find! I don't want what everyone else has got, I want the unusual stuff. For example, Bosemani Rainbows or Parkensoni Rainbows, There is only one fish store within 60 Miles of me that carries the Bosemani out of about 15 -20 stores, They are HARD to find in my area, In fact I have never seen a Live Parkensoni Rainbow, and I have searched 4 States. My LFS cant even ever order them! There are alot of Rainbow fish That are not to common, and I love them! Just can't ever seem to find them without paying $30 shipping to get them online. Badis fish is another that i never see, and I had to order my Cochus blue tetras, No one around here had ever heard of them! Also, Killifish, Like Clown Killifish, seem to be hard to come by, There are several Killi's that are Scarce, and Oddball Plecos would be interesting! Clown Pleco, Madusa Head Pleaco, Lizard Tail Pleco. So, I would recommend The oddest Most Rare fish for your area that you can get your hands on!

I've lucked out with our LFS -- caught a shipment of Boesemani day after it arrived and bought all 7 of them. They were only 8 bucks each and I saved myself at least 50$ in shipping :)

Here's what I want but won't get/have bought/am going to get: rainbow fish (especially Parkinsoni, Praecox, Turquois, Boesemani, and Pseudomugil gertrudae), kuhli loaches, otocinclus cats, SAE (not CAE!), gudgeons! want want want -- especially Peacock and Goo-obo Gudgeons, Farowella cats, Odessa barbs, bichir, weather loach, killifish, Synodontis cats, puffers, elephant nose, baby whale, African butterfly fish

I think that's it.

I think the best way to get an asnwer to his question is to ask your customer or hand them a questionaire.

Marine Cleanup Crew (snails, Shrimp, Stars, hermit Crabs) dissapear very fast when they Come in to my lfs! Its also handy for the LFS to have loads of availible liverock as shipping is expensive

Apart from that Lions are always good
