My parents have had a pond in the garden for a couple of years now. It's always had about 4 goldfish in it that were purchased way back when the pond was installed.
They've recently emptied the pond for maintenance, and to my surprise, they showed me an extra fish in there that was never purchased or released into the pond!
The garden is fenced so no other people have access to the area. The only thing we can think of is that the fish may have entered the system in a bag of pond weed either as a fry or as an egg.
In any case, now that this fish has grown up from about 0.2 inches to about 4 inches its become apparent that we have no idea what species it is.
Some quick facts:
- We live in Northern Australia (it is likely its a native?)
- The fish is currently about 4 inches long
- Its quite timid and prefers low light environments
- Its quite hardy, as its survived my parents neglect in the pond
- DONT trust the color in the photos, the fish is a very neutral flesh-color/grey
Any ideas on what it is?
Thanks
Apologies for the low quality photos, I had to use my parents camera whilst over there for dinner.
