Im new to aquariums and i have a few questins about compatbilyit

ive got a 29 gal

Im wondering if
bettas
neon tetras
dwarf gouramis
rainbowfish

Bettas and gouramis are from the same family and are rumored to not get along. However, many people believe it's the shape of the fish that causes agression not the family. (both male bettas and gouramis don't get along with other males of their own kind) Perhaps someone with more insight could confirm this?

Also, pick your rainbows wisely. they need to be in groups of 6 or more and many species are too large for a 29Gal tank; I believe "dwarf" rainbows (Melanotaenia praecox) will do alright.

Hope this helps!

my male betta and male gourami are in the same 10 Gal tank, no problems. I think it has to do with spawning though

makes sense

Welcome, Jim,
I tried putting my male betta(who just died after about three years) in my 20 and he went after everthing; male, female, gourami, otocinclus, kuhli. But thats just mine. Some keep several male gouramis together with no problem. I have two red neon male DGs in with 4 powder blue female DGs and there was a little chasing a flaring but no fin-nipping or other damage. And since I added the 6 white clouds everone seems to be getting along.
