Not all countries have the same freedom of religion that we do in the US. I seriously doubt that anyone in Saudi Arabia would be allowed to watch the movie.
deff gotta agree with the dog man on this one. Many countries dont have the same rights as ours. Not to mention, this is all about perspective. If a muslum movie came out discrediting the christian or jewish religion there would be quite an uproar.
It upsetts me, none the less, to see this happen. People should believe in their faith enough to be able to see a movie and not feel threatened. I honestly think that if anyone converts from their religion due to a movie, they didnt have much faith to begin with. I know we are supposed to keep religous threads off, but i feel that this is an important issue. Im a non-denominational christian, my belief in in christ comes from within, it doesnt come from the media, and its not changed by the media. Im glad that we live in a place where people can express there beliefs, but im worried about the possible double standards.
Just chiming in here--there has not been a decision in terms of religious or political postings. For now, as long as it remains peaceful and is not criticism of different cultures, I don't see any problem with this topic. If it starts going downhill, or becomes a debate on merits of other countries, I'm going to have to lock it.
chunks--I don't think the movie slams any one religion or another, isn't it a movie about his life and death, maybe I should watch it again
OG this wasn't meant to be a religious thread, I think I was just confused about the lengths some will go to to curtail different points of view maybe in other places, certainly we take alot of our freedoms for granted, and we think that by having some freedoms we should be allowed to have others that do not necessarily serve the public good :sad
no, my insinuation wasnt that the movie purposefully discredits other religons. My point is that people should have enough faith that they arent threatened by a movie. On the same note im upsett that people go to see such a movie to "revitalize" their faith. Have we honestly become that reliant on tv?
IMO we can't expect people to respect our own culture unless we respect theirs.
Our deciding what other cultures/religions/ethnicities should or should not do is a slippery slope.
You, me, and everyone else in this entire world only know the things which we have been taught or given access to. What and how you believe is mostly a product of where you were born- random geographic placement. It is perfectly OK not to understand a particular cultures belief system or teachings, but to discredit them for having those beliefs is pure arrogance IMO.
