I understand that I can only treat free-swimming ich and that's why treatment takes so long. To my understanding, treatment is only finished when the organism has encysted, fallen off, become free-swimming, and then killed.

My question is, how quickly will medicine kill ich that is not on a fish? I ask because I need to use a filter from a tank with ich on another tank, but don't want to spread the disease. I do, however, want to preserve my beneficial bacteria. Will a "bath" of the filter media with quickcure, ridich, etc. effectively kill the parasite in one shot?

Thanks!

You should wait at least a full week from the time they are free floating. Continue the treatment and this should be good. After the week then you should be safe to use it.
