In praise of the common Harlequin rasbora

Oh they totally color up when they're happy, esp in a planted tank. A totally worthwhile...and hardy...schooler.

I have 8 of these active little guys/gals along with 6 dwarf neon rainbows. the harlequins along with the rainbows school together and offer endless activity in my 36 gal bowfront. they are peaceful with tankmates. fantastic small fish variety selection.

I'm glad other out there appreciate these little gems. My tank is heavily planted, so that may explain why they look so darn happy.

The colors are what surprised me the most - my wife commented that they looked like reef fish because they were so vibrant looking.

i don't have harlies, but i have a few hundred espei and they GLOW. Exceptional schoolers. Sometimes those underrated fish make a more powerful display than the rare ones.

They're my all time favorite schoolers. Never nippy like many tetras & barbs, hardy & beautiful. I have them mixed with espei. I also like red tailed rasboras, another underrated fish.

I keep going back and forth between harlies and espei in my stocking plan.

I'm wondering how they compare (other than size) in terms of schooling, what level they hang at in the tank, dominance play, feeding activity. Any sort of behavioral info would be helpful.

And apologies for the semi-hijack. Hope no one minds too much! :)

I'd like to know too!

The espeis are slightly smaller and more copper colored, less round in body shape and more streamlined. They are very much a top to mid dweller, mine staying more towards the top (i do have a few hundred in a species tank, so that may alter slightly in a community setting). They eat very excitedly and are a ton of fun to keep. I am tryinig to figure out where to keep them in one of my displays long term because I like them so much.
