I just bought a full reef set-up. I have been running a fresh water tank for some time, and finally broke down and went after a great deal.
I have a very large sump that came with the tank (55 gallon). There is a separate box built inside the sump that the previous owner identified as a protein skimmer... but he also admitted that he never used it. I guess I'm uncertain that he knew for certain.
The box stands about 9 or 10 inches tall, by two inches deep & two inches wide. There is a small hole around an inch or two from the top. There's a much larger hole at the top, as well as on the one side, around the same level as the small hole.
IF I understand the design, I would pump water in through the small hole. It would be expelled through the large hold at the same level, and the protein bubbles would escape through the upper hole and into some sort of holding cell.
Does this make sense? IS this a protein skimmer? If so, is my concept on how it is supposed to work the correct assumption?
It's late, and I'm not prepared to take an upload a photo. If that helps, I'll get something uploaded tomorrow.
Thanks in advance for any advice/knowledge.
