I leave to visit home for one weekend and come back to find my betta and micro danios lingering on the edge of life. My roommate turn the thermostat down to 65 and wonders why my TROPICAL fish are barely alive.

I kindly asked him to not do this again and he immediately starts arguing with me, saying "They're not my responsibility. You should take them with you next time." I guess he doesn't understand how impractical it is to move 2 tanks home and back for 2 days. You think he'd have figured this out after 2 years. :swear:

Why did he turn it down??? Or am I mixing up the heater in the tank for the thermostat lol

Danios and bettas can easily handle temps into the low 60's. I once witnessed a danio tank that had frozed over on the surface due to a power outage and they all survived once power was re-established. Read the wikpedia fish facts on both species and you will see. Get a heater with a thermostat and it wont matter if it were 40 degrees, your tank would stay where you put it.

Danios can survive cold temps, but Betta should have it warmer.

Was it the house temp or the ones in the fish tanks? The tanks should have their own for winter and just in case times.

I have Danio erythramicron, very small and delicate.

We just had a little talk. He now knows how to use the heaters and why such drastic temperature shifts aren't good for them.

We usually keep the apartment temp. at 73, but he turns it down over the weekends when I go home. I had the heaters off because the lights on the tanks keep the water around 76-78 for the danios and 80 for the betta.

If you are so concerned with the temperature of the fish, and i'm assuming this roommate has been around for a while, since you said something about 2 year, you should invest in a heater. . You should know that he likes it cold after 2 years, and I think he should not have to make himself uncomfortable because of your fish. If you are not in the appt/dorm room he should be able to make himself comfortable. A heater is fairly cheap and if you are so concerned about your fish you should get one. This post sounds very pretentious and selfish. Perhaps you should consider living arrangements with out a roommate.

I said that I have a heater! It just wasn't plugged in. I just showed him how to work it a little while ago.

Why not plug in the heater 24/7. If your lights and the ambient temp keep the tank at or above the set temp then your heater shouldn't be using any power anyways. Set it on the low end so it only has to kick in when temps drop to uncomfortable levels for the fish.
