i have a standard 20 high that i added 1 25lb bag of eco-complete to. the tank is now cycled as as i start to plant it i think i need a deeper substrate. could i add some regular gravel on top of the eco complete, and do i need to remove the inhabitants to do this? there are curently 2 platies some snails and a shrimp. The tank is going to house a f8 puffer when the lfs gets one in for me and the platies will be moved back to the 45.

Rinse it well and add it in.

thanks guys. should i take the snails and shrimp out or will they be ok if there in there while im adding?

i think that depends how careful(gently) you are adding it. if your just gonna dump it in then you might wanna remove them. if you are going to use a cup or container of some kind to slowly put it into the tank, directly onto the bottom you should be good.

I recently did the reverse (added Eco-complete to gravel) and it says on the Eco-complete bag that you should try to gently mix it into the gravel so that you don't suffocate the bacterial established in your original substrate.

i originally thought one bag of eco complete would be enough. but once i tried to add some plants it wasnt deep enought to root some larger plants

IMHO, the depth of your substrate is up to you. I clean and set up fish tanks on the sides for private homes and buisnesses and I tell them its up to them. I have a woman put 1 bag of play sand (50lbs) in a 55, I personally would have put 2 or 3...Its what you like and what youll want to look at/clean properly..
