My big guy, a 7" comet, caught himself between the RUGF's downtube and the powerhead filter. Beats the heck outa me HOW he did that.

I freed him OK, but now he has two flaps of loose skin on his head. Doesn't seem to bother him...he's as moochy as usual :) He's in a 30G with 5 other GF and a pleco (new 75G coming soon!)

I hadn't re-salt-ed the tank after the last water change, so I brought it back to 1 tsp/10G, and added Melafix 5ml/10G.

Am I better off to leave him alone if it looks OK? I'm sure I could lift him out and treat the wounds...but..."If it's working, don't fix it"...right?

The treatment you are doing might be just fine. Pay close attention to water conditions while he is on the mend.

Sometimes it's best to let em heal on their own. He's looking slightly better today.

I must have caught him right when it happened. He wasn't stuck 5 minutes earlier.

I'll do a ~50% water change in the next few days + top off the salt and the melafix. Gravel needs vac'd anyway...GF are such prodigious producers.

My fancy Goldie hit the driftwood once and it looked pretty bad. I didn't do anything, just a 30% water change every other day for a week. She healed quickly & nicely.
Luck has something to do with it too.

Good clean fresh water via frequent 25% PWC's will do more than most things to help a sick fish heal itself.

Indeed. If it starts to look worse instead of better, you can reevaluate from there.

Just pay close attention to your parameters, keep everything sparkly clean. One of my big goldfish was redecorating the tank and sliced her bottom lip open, leaving a big flap of bloody skin. She healed up within about a week and a half, I just made sure to keep everything clean to keep down the risk of infection. I also fed her Jungle Labs medicated food, to fight any bacteria that might be hanging out.
