I work at Petsmart, got the manager to give me a cichlid that had both eyes really messed up. He has scrapes on his head, its NOT pop eye. Is it safe to say the other cichlids beat him up?? I've heard they go for eyes before (dirty fighting).

I need to know if this is contagious!!!!

Thx!!!!

P.s. I wish I had a camera but don't, his eyes are cloudy white but it looks like the only the dermal eye tissue, they do have a 'scraped' look.

It could be hole in the head, aka head and lateral line erosion. Google it for more info...do you have a pic of the fish?

Hole in the Head Guard by Jungle Labs has worked well for me to treat it in the past, along with New Life Spectrum Thera A pellets.

You could try Epsom salts for the eyes. Even if it's not popeye, it still might help. 1 teaspoon per 3 gallons is what I use, dissolve it in some warm water first. (Magnesium sulfate is sold at any pharmacy or grocery store)

def not HIH, i've dealt w/ that before (crappy LFS). I really didn't want to set up another quarentine tank but i think I might have to. My normal quarentine tank has a few tetras that i don't want to get eaten.

It looks MUCH better this morning and fish is up and moving around normally, eyes have cleared a little but still look real bad, furthermore I think it's blind now =p it seems to go for food but has a lot of difficutly actually finding it (but it will eat once it finds it). I think the salt in my tank def helped. I know i have more salt in my tank than petsmart. =p

I hope she makes it!!!!

Good luck! Try feeding large sinking foods like algae wafers, strips of nori (roasted seaweed used for sushi)

Do you know what kind of cichlid it is, btw?
