I tested my tap water and the GH level was going so high that I had to abort the test. The type of test kit is the kind where you put drops of solution into the sample and count the number of drops it takes for the water to turn green (1 drop = 1 dGH). Well, after 45 drops the water was still nowhere near green (dark yellow/gold). I know the tap water around here is hard but this is ridiculous. Something isn't right. The only thing I can figure is maybe the test results are eroneous since the test kit is 5 years old, but I didn't think these test kits have a shelf life.

Even drop test kits have a shelf life - for most accurate results it shouldn't be more than a year old. They do have expiration dates on the box if you check. I'd try with a new kit.
Buy a new kit for sure. If you still have problems, repost with the brand name you are using.

Yeah, I'm gonna get a new test kit. The one I have now (the one that's 5 years old) is Aquarium Pharmacueticals and I cannot find an expiration date on the box, manual, or solution bottle. I emailed them 5 days ago and asked about shelf life but haven't gotten a response. Anyways, I'll pick up a new kit and post the results. Thanks.
Went to Petsmart tonight and they didn't have the AquariumPharm KH/GH test kit, so I'll have to look somewhere else or order it online. However, they did have Jungle Labs "Quick Dip" strips for only $0.72 so I bought it to hold me over and just to try it out. The results of the KH test looked to be between the colors representing 180ppm and 300ppm. The result of the GH tested looked to be between the colors representing 150ppm and 300pm. So I is suppose 240ppm KH and 225ppm GH would be the best estimate at this time. The chart with the kit only showed ranges in ppm rather than both ppm and dKH/dKH, but I found a converter here.
