I currently have a 3 inch red devil and a 2.5 inch jaguar cichlid in a 40 gallon tank... dont worry this wont be permanat im getting a 125 gallon soon...(which im hoping wont be too small still) Heres the problem. I have owned Red Devils before, and i know tank mates are most likely out of the question, but i couldnt resist trying to find a tank mate for the little red devil. So when i bought the red devil from my lfs, i also bought a little jag. i have never owned one before but i did my research and i figured that if i can get them into a big enough tank, they wont kill each other. well, right now the red devil, is bullying the Jag quite a bit... it has plenty of hiding places but i dont wanna keep himif his whole life is gonna consist of him getting picked on. Is there another type of cichlid i can by to help even out the aggression. Ive tried Dithers, the RD ignores them and The Jag tries to kill them every chance he gets... If these two fish coexisting is impossible, which of the two would have a better chance of living in a tank with a tank mate... thanks very much

I would pick one or the other if it were me and keep only that fish with a group of dithers. 125 with a jag and a group of 5-6 silver dollars would be a nice setup

Man! i suppose you are most likely right... IS THERE ANYONE THAT HAS KEPT ANOTHER CICHLID WITH A RED DEVIL IN A 125... IS IT POSSIBLE!?!?!?!

It can be done... i kept a jag and a full grown male red devil in a 75 for 2 years with not 1 fin nipped... I had some jag/JD crossbreds from the female jag and a male dempsey i had and i kept 3 of them for a total of 5 fish in the tank... there was always some chasing but never any jaw locking or fin nipping... the red devil DID kill the male dempsey but for some reason wouldnt mess with the female jag... of course the other fish were half grown when i got the 1 inch lil devil... and the devil outgrew them all and was 12 inches long in 1 year... the jag was about 8-9 in female... if it were me and i had the size of fish u do and ARE seriously planning on upgrading to 100gal+ i would put some agrressive tankmates in there with them... probably some good sized convicts or maybe a few texas cichlids...

Hey thanks very much.. that was a good morale booster... i think ill try convicts... i had a feeling it is possible. then again evry cichlid is different. im gonna give it a shot. im thinking acouple convicts with some more giant danios or maybe silver dollars.

Is your lil jag a male ... can u tell? if he is its most liklely gonna get very ugly no matter what u do.. esp if the red devil is a male too... female jags seem to be more submissive and less dominant...

I used to have a Red Devil, and I kept it with all kinds of other fish - even small ones, like tiger barbs and corys - and it never harassed or killed anything. However, I absolutely would not recommend this with any normal Red Devil. Mine wasn't normal. It was kinda "special"...it had a bit of a sideways Sylvester Stallone face, and I think it was wired a little funny. It was like a dumb, overexcited puppy. It was also OBSESSED with my cat, and they would stare at each other and follow each other up and down the tank, like star crossed lovers who could never be. He was a fantastic, beautiful fish, full of personality, and I miss him to this day.

I have a very large Red Devil in a 125G tank. Here are his tankmates:

1 Red Devil
1 Jack Dempsey
1 Jewel Cichlid
1 Electric yellow Cichlid
1 Electric blue Cichlid
1 Cobalt blue Cichlid
1 Red Tail Black Shark
1 Black Shark
1 Green Severum
1 Chinese algie eater

If all else fails and you want another tank mate, as long as you have the 125G tank 1st, the Black Sharks get alot bigger than a devil will and Ive yet to see any cichlid take out a BS:) Plus they are spectacular looking:) Here is a video of a full grown black shark, I think you will be very impressed:)

It pretty hard to tell, but im almost posotive the RD is a male. As for the jag, i cant really tell. Im leaning more towards a female, but it is to early to tell yet. Those black shrks are cool. If all else fails i will most likely give one of those guys a shot. I getting my 125 very soon so im hoping that will relieve alot of the tension between the RD and the Jag... until then i made a little cave that only the jag can fit into. its pretty funny how mad it made the RD:)!!!
