iron for human consumption?

I was also wondering this. I work in a pharmacy so I picked some up but i was thinking of returning it an getting ferrous gluconate instead. Does anyone have thoughts on this ?

Are these sources of iron, chelates? If so I would say they're fine. Just want to watch the dosing. There is another product called Iron Proteinate used to fortify dog and cat foods. I know for a fact that proteinate contains chelated iron. But it may only be available in bulk.

-edit-
I should inject here though that I have never tried this product in the aquarium. There may be other chemicals that don't play fair in the water column.

Ferrous sulfate is Fe2(SO4)3
ferrous gluconate if I remember currectly is Fe(C6O7H12)2

I looked up some info on flourish iron, and I found this description,
"is a highly concentrated (10,000mg-L) iron gluconate supplement. It should be used if the requirements for iron exceed those that Flourish provide at the recommended dose. Once dosed the iron is maintained in the ferrous (fe 2) state for an extended period due to the polygluconate complexation which allows the plants to use the iron far easier than from EDTA sources."

So I beleive for flourish; they used ferrous gluconate. If it costs the same as the sulfate then it should be around 5 bucks but I'll have to check tomorrow when I go to work. I don't have ferrous gluconate on hand so I can't use the total mg I'd be using from the box, so the roundabout way. Roughly calculated, I beleive that in ferrous gluconate, iron makes up 12%. So the concentration of iron is 1200 mg/L in flourish.

Ferrous sulfate has 650 mg of iron per box, and lets say it is the same for ferrous gluconate, then I could make 542 ml at the same concentration as flourish. For 500 ml of flourish I beleive it to be 7-8 bucks, also Does anyone know if they put other stuff in it besides iron ? I looked but I only saw iron. I have a feeling the iron supplement is going to cost similar, making it more cost effective to buy the flourish product, unless I can order it and get alot cheap. So I'll have to check the ordering book tomorrow as well, maybe I can get something for potassium in there.
