Is 10 african cichlids in a 29gal over stocking?

Bunny is right about the bigger tank being better. However, that 30 gal with only 2 is asking for trouble(of course, the types of fish matter here, but this is generaly true for a lot of common africans). I guess overstocking is the incorrect term here. Heavy stocking with additional filtration is a better way to describe it.

Lots of Fish = Lots of Water Changes

I think 6 or 8 would be good for mbuna with lots of places to hide.

I think the more the merrier with some of the mbuna. With that said, I am fairly sure some would say my tanks are overstocked.

You really need to figure out what exact "africans" you are interested in. Some get bigger than others.

What is and is not overstocking seems to vary. I would find species you like and ask if they can be together and find suitable tank mates and just keep asking questions.

Depends on the type of cichlid IMO.

I would only put 6-8 shell dwellers in a 29 gallon tank. I only have 4 in mine right now.
Shell Dweller profiles

IMO I wouldnt put mbuna, peacocks, or haps in anything less than a 55 if you plan to overstock to spread aggression.

If you have a 29 and you have to have africans I would do shelldwellers or pick a type of mbuna/peacock you like and set up a 1m/3f group and breed them.
