Is it pop eye?

Cloudy eyes is a condition known as "Cloudy Eye" :D I'm not trying to be smart, that's actually what it's known as.

There are different causes, including bacteria, irritation, old age, cataracts, etc. so it can be quite hard to pinpoint a specific cause. How old is the fish? I have a halfbeak that has had cloudy eye for a long time now.....it seemed to improve a bit, but the eyes never became totally clear again. It doesn't seem to affect the fish in any way, so I've never tried medication.

In your case, I'd be worried about him not eating and would probably try some medication.

*Edit* - just noticed the part about the "bad" water......sounds like that may have been what caused it. Lots of particulates could cause irritation, and poor water quality could invite bacterial infection. I'd see if his condition improves with the better water before trying medication.

Ths fish is about 3 years old and 8-10". This doesn't seem overly old to me.

As for the not eating, part of the problem is that I have been feeding feeder fish and am switching to pellets. The fish chews them for 10-15 seconds and spits them out. The pellets are ground up when he spits them out. It seems as if he doesn't get he is supposed to swallow them too :-p The has to chew the same pellet about 2 or three times to soften it up. Then it just seems to crumble. I'm using the floaitng pellets by hikari.

Ok, in that case his not wanting to eat probably has to do more with the change in food than stress due to the eye condition. I'd just give it time and see if things improve. More frequent water changes always seem to be helpful, but otherwise wait and watch IMO.

thats a nice looking jag i just got 2 baby jags i cant wait for them to grow :dance

You might also try google. This is a very common fish - at least around where I live. Nearly every lfs sells them that has cichlids. You might need a bigger tank than a 10 gallon though ;-)

As for the agressiveness, its really a toss up most of the time. generally, jaugars are agressive but there can always be exceptions. I have raised several cichlids from 1" to adult and there always seems to be a certain ranking in each group of fish. There is one dominant fish and less dominant fish. Dominance seems to be genertic, not a learned trait - at least as far as I can tell. Dogs are the say way. Its really a toss up if your going to get an agressive fish or not if you buy them young.

Also, if you think the color of the fish is good now, the breeding colors are even better. There is a faint redish purple stripe across the fish. They also dig a large pit when breeding and the pair jaw locks a lot. The fish in the pic is a female I think since the top fin isn't so pointed. I had two other jags in the tank that have died. The fish in the pic was part of the breeding pair but the other fish died. I'm thinking of looking for another fish but I'm not sure about it. The jaguar I have seems to be shy since it hasn't had tank mates in a while. I want to add another fish but I don't think its such a good idea since I only have a 55 gallon.
