I have 4 platies in my tank and two of them are always together. The male follows the female around religiously and sorta nipps at her side. He also chases the other male away when he comes too close. Lately the female has gotten a very round belly. I thought that she might be pregnant, but i read that you can usually see the babies little eyes in light coloured fish. My female is white...but i still can't see anything. I was wondering what the chnces are that she is pregant and how long it takes to auctully have the babies. She has looked like this for awhile now...i wasn't looking to breed the fish when i bought them so i was wondering what i should do with the babies when and if they are born. IF you can help me i would appreciate it. Thanks!

Healthy platies all have fat bellys. Look right behind the fat belly and if there is a black area that is probably a sign of her being pregnant. That black spot if the mass of babies growing in there. I have never seen the eyes of the babies on my white platy but then there are probably 10 or more babies in there so there are really tiny at first.

Livebearers are pretty well gauranteed to reproduce in an aquarium. If you have a mix of genders, the female is pregnant. Hard to say how pregnant, because females can store sperm for a few months--but the eyes are not visible until the latter stages.

As to what to do with the fry--if you have room, save them. If not, nature will takes it's course. Other fish, and often the parents, will eat the fry.

I just looked and i found that little balck spot behind her belly....so does that mean that she is pregnant for sure? Does anyone know how long it will be untill she has her babies and how many will she have?
Thank you to everyone who answered!

The last batch my mommy platy had was 11 (that I counted anyway). I hear that they can have much more than that, as high as 50 even (yikes).

The black spot sounds like she is pregnant. It could be a month of more before birth happens. I have learned not to wait and just let things happen at their own time. If you are concerned about saving as many fry as possible then I suggest getting another tank and placing mom into it by herself with lots of plants.
