I sat down to enjoy my wet friends and notice the female platy looked a little plump. If she is indeed expecting, how long is the gestation period?

I've attached some photos of the fish in question.

I'm not sure how long the gestation period is, but the way to tell that I have seen is the female will get plump, and will develop a dark area near her vent (at least in lighter-colored fish, not sure about that deep red fish). All the pregnant females I've seen get it, so that's the only way I've seen to tell.

I'd say she has a week or more to go.

It depends a little on the water temperature.

Do you have a tank for her to have her babies in? It doesn't need to be big. Can you get some Java Moss to put in there, for the babies to hide in? A spong filter, running on the same pump as you're using (get a T-valve to divide the two airlines) would be all the filtration she needs for a while...

It's good to move her a little early, not right during the process of-- what is it, frybirth?
