Apparently, not.
I really wish people would stop dying fish! Every time I see that
gold fish snack commericial, (now in colors!) I worry that they are
going to start doing that to gold fish too! You know, I think I want a purple dog! Why not? I dye my hair! so it shouldn't hurt the dog. while we're at it, I think I want my cockatiel, green.
and you know, a regular ol tabby just isn't good enought either,
I want it pink!

Write a letter to all the stores who sell these fish and explain to them why it isn't exceptable. Maybe some of them will hear you. Most of the people buying those fish, are aquarium noobies who don't know any better. It is our responsibility as experienced aquarists to educate them.

Don't Buy Dyed Fish!

Sad thing is, these people wouldn't know a dyed fish from a non-dyed one, if it slapped them across the mouth and face.

I was unaware that rams could be dyed (why would you want to?).

Anything may be dyed--through hormonal feedings, injections, or stripping and then stimulating regrowth of a slime coat, among other methods.
