I'm curious to know if there was a way to keep a tank parasite free. Would some kind of additive, or chemical work?

I ask this because it seems things can pop up out of nowhere and really get out of hand. I wanted to know for sure if there is a way to have some kind of prevention of this. Obviously, I can't use much salt because of my live plants.

If anyone has any suggestions on this, please list them in your posts! Thanx~ Angela :)

baby parasites come from adult parasites, and unless you are using untreated shallow well water there is no risk of them coming in through your pipes.

That being said good quarantine and some general knowledge of symptoms will keep your tank parasite free for years and years. There is no way for parasites to come in except for your live additions to the tank.

To answer your question , I would say UV or ozone, but care needs to be taken with ozone and I don't know many people who use it on FW. I am not recomending you use these methods but if you do want to use one of them I suggest the UV.

Oh, well thanx for that:) I've been keeping a close eye on my danios because of the one that died recently. They all appear normal, along with the rest of the crowd. Anything I see that I haven't seen them doing before, and I'll sit there and watch for a few minutes just to make sure it isn't serious.

Quarantine is your best bet. However, that being said, aren't some of the fungal type of problems brought on by poor water quality? Or does that just make the problem worse?

When we are talking about parasites in particular, UV is only marginally effective. The parasite has to pass through the UV steriliser before it finds a host, otherwise it can continue to live in the tank. This is one of the ways that ich has created it's myths and legends. People think it has to be dead, and then when it shows up again, they think it spontaneously appeared, they don't consider that it was there the whole time. The same effect could be said for many parasites.

Fungus and bacteria are truly always in our tanks, and if our fish become weakened damaged or highly stressed they can contract infections. I do not know how effective UV may be against fungus and bacteria. I imagine it would do fine during the water borne stages, but obviously would be useless for things growing on tank surfaces
