I'm looking to move my filtration from a small chamber in my tank hood to a proper sump. This will also free the hood to put on some proper lighting units. I also want to put my heater in the sump as well. And, I would also like the sump to give me another 10 gallons of water volume. I have started the build phase by ordering a drop box and it should be here next week it is a small 300GPH which should be a decent enough size for my little up and coming reef tank. I plan to convert an aquarium for the sump. So some questions:

Do i do a chamber of bioballs, then a refugium chamber, then a place for skimmer and pump? Do i really need a skimmer for a 30gallon tank or even a refugium for that matter? I am keen to do whatever is needed to ensure my tank is healthy. I'm also having trouble finding some solid plans online. Thanks for any advice!

Ideally you should skip the bio balls and I think a skimmer is a great addition to any size tank along with macro, so I would use the first chamber for your skimmer the 2nd chamber for some macro and the 3rd for the return pump. JMO
