Is it a male??
Ive had *him for almost 3 years now.. and was hoping to one day breed.. *he killed a juvenile JD that i thought was female(had color all around mouth) about 6 months ago. that was before the move from the 29 to the 55. :(
any hints to finding the right mate?

Yes a very big male. For a right mate I'd say buy a few females and see which one he likes most. Make sure they are breeding size 4inches plus.

You have a male, a female's blue spots on her under her eyes will go down all the way, I have looked a freaking nice site about cichlid and I still didn;t remember to save the URL, looking for it agin right now, will post it or edit this reply.
Ok here it is, I thought I had a diff place that listed New World Cichlids also, but this one is good to, it has American and African cichlid proofiles and tell about care, breeding & sexing, ect ect
