i got some young jack dempsys and i got a pair out of the 4 that i had YEAH!!
my question is how big do they have to be before they start trying to breed. the ones i have now are only a couple of inches long i know they are young but just wondering oh and in case your wondering they are the only 2 in the tank of a size of 55 gallons. so for now....they have lots of room to swim around

I think 9-12 inches. Around that size, not sure. Either I'm right, or I'm thinking Green Terrors...

Dempseys can get about 6-8 inches. Males tend to be larger - I would say that a male might be ready to spawn at about 4" and females at about 3" - in a 55 by themselves and lots of water changes they should grow well for you - good luck!

My big male is 9.5 inches now. He really is an SOB. Kills just about everything I put in the tank with him. He has also killed 4 girlfriends.

The current girlfriend that I am keeping in another tank is almost 6.5 inches.

Most of the Jd's I have kept have been in the 6 to 8 inch range with the one exception being the big bad boy.

wow thanks everyone i plan on getting another 55 gallon tank...
but as for now this is what i have
20 gallon : 2 honey gourmi, 2 platties, 15-20 small guppies (breed like rabbits)
1 catfish, 3 zebra danos

30 gallon : 4 rainbow cichlids 1 pleco

55 gallon : 3 jack dempsy (small) and what i thought was a, jack i now beleive to be a green terror. and 1 pleco

10 gallon I am cycling now for hospital tank

and working on getting another 10 gallon
and a 55 gallon and then getting rid of the 20 gallon.
lots of work but it is well worth it for the hobbyist
