I have some mopani wood with some holes in it. I stuck the stems of my java fern in the holes. I guess that is the same as burying them, so that is probably where I went wrong. The leaves keep getting holes in them and turning brown.

I bought some fishing line to tie them on the wood. Will that work better?

:help::help::help:

I thought once the plant attaches, you can clip it off.

i don't think that sticking the ferns into the wood is the same as burying the rhizome...burying the rhizome causes it to rot, i have lots of ferns stuck in holes of my wood and they are doing great. Java fern makes baby ferns on brown spots on the leaves. How long have you had it? what is your lighting and do you dose any ferts?

I use flourish twice a week.

The lighting...I'm sort of an idiot on explaining that. :huh:

I have the bulb box. What do you need to know. :)

Is this the lighting that came with your tank? is it the 55g?
Java fern is a low light plant, but typically will do best between 1-2 wpg (from my experience). In my tanks that I have it in now (1-1.5 wpg) it took awhile for it to take off and I had alot of older leaves die off in the first month or so.
I am not a plant guru by any means, hopefully someone else will chime in and give you some more input on other causes of browning leaves. I know that deficiences can cause this, but I am not exactly sure what is missing causing the deficiency (for example, iron, potassium, etc).

I should have bought the additional ferts yesterday.

The bulb didn't come with the tank. It's a Aqua-Glo 40W bulb. The LUX (whatever that is) is 130. It is "ideal" for planted aquariums.

It's worthless isn't it. :headshake2:

40w over a 55g is about .8 wpg...very low light. I personally don't even dose ferts in my tanks (lotsa inverts everywhere) and my plants are slow-growing but healthy. I think the fern might be struggling a little bit because the light is so low (assuming this is your 55g). The bulb is not worthless, you just may need to add some more light. I am hoping one of the plant gurus is gonna chime in soon, I see Sammie eyeing the thread

I have no idea how to add light.

I have a blue LED submersible nightlight. Should I switch that out with a white or a green light?

Would that help?

I don't know if LED would help or not, I have no experience with them. You would have to modify your hood (upgrade ballast) or change the hood to upgrade your lighting.
