my water hardness is HIGH like hell.... PH is about 7.5... a little co2 ...yes ferts ...and some natural gravel as substrait...

mine is grown in high light too and it seems to produce lots of babies which in turn turns the leaves brown with holes.
THATS EXACTLY MY PROBLEM

I have Java fern under about 5 watts/gal and they grow HUGE with lots of small babies. Have not had a problem.

I just pulled a Java Fern out of my tank (early this year) that took a 5gal bucket to take to LFS.

so, I'm guessing I shouldn't use ultra hard water with high lights?

That is happening because your water is too hard. try softening the water to get better results. They will stop making plantlets in softer water too

Outside of buying a water softner for your house, how do you soften water?I have the same problem with my java ferns as well, under medium to high light.
