Java fern

I bought some java fern today and am not sure what to do with it. I have read to just place it on top of the substrate and I have also read to plant it down in the substrate. Which is the right way?

Your java fern will not thrive if you plantit in the substrate or place it on he substrate. Java ferns do best when placed on driftwood or rocks they do not need to be planted

tie it to some driftwood or some rock, maybe some ornaments, i tied mine to a coconut shell.

tie it down to something with fishing string. in a month or two it will attach itself and you can cut the string off
